The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery, Vol. II: 1910-1921

About the Book

First published in 1987.

The second volume of L. M. Montgomery’s selected journals document the beginnings of her fame as the author of Anne of Green Gables, her early married life and the birth of her sons in Leaskdale, Ontario, and her agony in the World War I and its after effects. Quickly gathering fame (and a more comfortable income) as an authoress, the journal begins with Montgomery’s visit to her Boston publisher and her hilarious escapade in entertaining the Earl Grey. Her grandmother’s death frees Montgomery to marry the Reverend Ewan MacDonald, and after a joyous honeymoon in England and Scotland Montgomery moves to the parish of Leaskdale, Ontario. Though she sometimes writes stingingly of neighbours, parishioners and household, she is at large happy and busy in the first years of her marriage: alongside her duties as a minister’s wife, she writes prolifically in answer to fan demand for “more Anne.” However, as reality unfolds the pages darken with two lawsuits, the war news, signs of her husband’s mental instability and discomfort with her fame, and the death of her closest friend Frede Campbell in the influenza epidemic that followed the war.

Montgomery’s detailed storytelling renders the journal an important document of domestic life during the early 1900’s.
