The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery. Vol. V 1935-1942
About the Book
First published in 2004.
The fifth and final volume of L. M. Montgomery’s journals chronicles the author’s life from 1935 until her death at age 68 in 1942. It was published after a long wait, while copyrights and issues of privacy and sensitivity about neighbours and friends Montgomery had written about in her journals were resolved. Living in her west Toronto home, Montgomery enjoyed entertaining fans and communicating with fellow authors. At the same time, she was burdened with her husband’s melancholia, her anxiety over her son Chester’s academic record and marriage, while fearing Stuart’s conscription in the looming news of World War Two. As Montgomery endured grief, nervous breakdowns and an inability to write towards the end of her life, the journals are full of despair, and are heartbreakingly depressing.
They also represent an important historical document of the period leading up to the Second World War, and of the attitudes and treatments (or lack thereof) for mental illness and clinical depression in this decade.
