2000 Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story

Official Website Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story

Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (also known as “Anne3″) is a television movie produced and directed by Kevin Sullivan in association with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. It is a sequel to Sullivan’s Anne of Green Gables (1985) and Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (1987). Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie return to play Anne and Gilbert. The film aired on CBC on March 5-6, 2000.

The Continuing Story deals with Anne and Gilbert’s experiences during World War I. After trying briefly to pursue careers in New York - Gilbert at a hospital, and Anne at a publishing house where she meets the writer Jack Garrison - Anne and Gilbert return to Green Gables to be married. Gilbert departs shortly afterwards to join the war effort as a doctor, and Anne goes overseas to search for her husband when he is reported “missing in action.” As she travels across Belgium, France, Germany and England in search of Gilbert, she also becomes entangled in Jack Garrison’s underground efforts to end the war. After many narrow escapades, Anne finds Gilbert at the end of the war, and they return to Avonlea, adopting Jack Garrison’s orphaned son Dominic. According to Kevin Sullivan, this storyline completes the theme of family in the trilogy. [1]

The Continuing Story is loosely inspired by L. M. Montgomery’s novel, Rilla of Ingleside, in which Anne and Gilbert’s sons go off to fight in World War I, while Anne’s youngest daughter Rilla takes care of a war-baby on PEI. Sullivan’s completely original adaptaion has been criticized for a plotline and characters that are not within the spirit of Montgomery’s works. The drastic changes to Montgomery’s timeline also presents continuity issues with Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (1987) and Road to Avonlea (1990-1996).

The film has a new sequel-and-prequel, Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning (2008).
