Along the Shore: Tales of the Sea
About the Book

Edited by Rea Wilmshurst
First published in 1989 by McClelland and Stewart
Along the Shore: Tales of the Sea is a volume of 16 stories, collected and published by Rea Wilmshurst. The stories, originally published in various magazines and newspapers between 1897 - 1930, deal with those whose lives are influenced by the sea.
Montgomery grew up on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in PEI, and was familiar with both the beauty and danger which the sea presented. Rea Wilmshurst’s introduction points out that Montgomery had a particularly strong love for the sea. The sea furnishes a beautiful backdrop for several romantic short stories, while in others, it is a powerful force of nature that threatens human lives. The sea also exercises a strong emotional bond on those who live beside it. In these stories, we meet fishermen’s families, lighthouse keepers and sea-captains who are intimate with the sea, and passing tourists whose lives are changed forever by events on the shore.
