Chronicles of Avonlea is a short story collection set in Avonlea during the period of Anne of the Island. There are ocassional mentions of Anne throughout the stories.

Chronicles of Avonlea was adapted for the early episodes of the popular television series, Road to Avonlea.


Chronicles of Avonlea contains 12 short stories.

  1. The Hurrying of Ludovic - While spending one of her summers at Echo Lodge, Anne devises a plan to help Ludovic Speed, Theodora Dix’s beau of fifteen years, propose to her.
  2. Old Lady Lloyd - Having once lost her lover due to stubborn pride, the still proud and lonely Margaret Lloyd yearns to befriend his orphan daughter.
  3. Each in His Own Tongue- Rev. Leonard forbids his beloved grandson, a musical genius, to play the violin.
  4. Little Joscelyn- Frail old Aunty Nan loved the now-famous Little Joscelyn as a child, but cannot attend her concert.
  5. The Winning of Lucinda- Lucinda Penhallow had quarrelled with her fiance of fifteen years, Romney Penhallow, each refusing to be the first to speak to the other again. At Alice Penhallow’s wedding, Anne Shirley’s green dress helps a twist of fate in bringing the two together again.
  6. Old Man Shaw’s Girl - Old Man Shaw allows his beloved daughter to spend three years in Montreal with her Aunt. Will Sara come back changed?
