About the Book

Pat of Silver Bush 1933

First published in 1933 by McClelland and Stewart.

Patricia Gardiner is the fourth child of a loving family living on the beloved Prince Edward Island farm Silver Bush. Described as “loving too hard”, Pat rebels deeply against the usual changes of life as she grows up. The warmth of her devoted personality and her home draws her best friends, sweet Bets and lonely orphaned Jingle into the family circle. As time and change come to Silver Bush, the Irish family housekeeper Judy Plum sustains Pat with humourous and wise anecdotes of human nature.

Written during a period of personal difficulties late in L. M. Montgomery’s career (see Creation and Publication), Pat of Silver Bush world is redolent with the beauty and nostalgia of a time passing away. The humour and tragedy of birth, death, marriage, romance or illness are especially touching the Pat books.
