About the Book

The Blue Castle 1931

First published in 1931 by McClelland and Stewart

The Blue Castle is the story of meek ‘old maid’ Valancy Stirling, who embarks on things she has never tried before when she learns that she has a heart disease, and has only has a year to live. Her antics outrage her decorous clan.

There have been numerous attempts to make a movie out of The Blue Castle.  Two offers arose during L. M. Montgomery’s lifetime [1].  More recently, Eleanore Lindo, a Canadian televison producer, and Mary Young Leckie, an independent film producer, teamed up with Talisman Films between 1987 - 1998 to work on a film for The Blue Castle.  A draft script and initial plans to film in the Muskoka region had transpired by 1995, but the project was delayed by funding issues, and its current status is unknown.
